In the latest Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide June/July 2012 (pg 110-111), there is a Mad Men makeup/hair secrets.
BettyFrancis (January Jones):
- January's hair is set using a small curling iron and finished with White Sands settinbg spray, Kerastase hairspray and lots of teasing. Owen's notes that her hair pretty much falls into the Betty haristyle.
- Additionally, "She has a single process blonde. "
- A matte foundation and "pink lipstick like MAC Impassioned" are used to achieve the Betty look.
Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks):
- To achieve the Joan look, a curl set and and three-quarter length wig are used, as only "the outer edges and bangs are her own hair."
- In the office she is more conservative, but at night she is a little more Brigitte Bardot-like."
- "Christina's roots are touched up using Redkin haircolor."
- Joan's staple lip is "Laura Mercier lipstick in Baby Lips-an orangey-pink."
- "Peggy's hair is curled into the Peggy flip, and a lot of hairspray is used to coerce into the Peggy style as Moss's hair is very fine and straight."
- Her makeup is made to look as though she has not yet mastered the putting on makeup look. "Her lips are a natural pink tone, and Julie Hewett Cheekie is used on her cheeks."
.
These facts are from the show's Hair Department's Head Terrie Owen, and Makeup Department Head Lana Horochowski.
The Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide has become a great source for beauty secrets for some of my favorite stars. I highly recommend checking out this bimonthly magazine.
Note: I am not sponsored or being paid to write anything about this magazine.

I'm actually really disappointed that they do January Jones' hair with a curling iron. I suppose they can't really expect her to go home and sleep in pin curls as Betty would have done, but it's sad, seeing as the show is so authentic in other respects!

It is too bad, but I am not really surprised. As you said, I doubt they could get the actresses to sleep in them, and they probably only need the style to hold for a few hours anyways.
As an aside, Dita and Doris Mayday do their hair in hot sticks and hot rollers! I wish my hair would cooperate that easily, but for my hair to have any chance at holding a curl, I MUST sleep in some type of roller.
Interesting post! Must confess I only started watching Mad Men recently, but am definitely enjoying the styles!
Thank you for the sweet comment! It's so nice of you! I am sure you will look fabulous in a Bridgette Bardot look! :) Have a lovely evening sweety!

Honestly, Mad Men is not one of my favorite shows. I really had a hard time watching it at first as I thought it was a bit boring, and hated Don for cheating on Betty. Joan is my favorite by far. I really wish she had a bigger part.
Thank you for your sweet comment. I just adore Bardot's hair. Her hair seems pretty thick which I think makes it easier to get the 60s hair. My hair is thin and VERY damaged, so it doesn't like to cooperate very well.
I sometimes do my hair in hot rollers, but I find the results pretty unpredictable... plus, all that heat is no good for your hair!
Is your hair straight? Mine is curly, so it takes well at first, but later decides it liked the orginal curl better and springs back!

p.s. If your hair is damaged, try Afro products... Google to find an Afro shop near you. My hair isn't damaged, but it is very, very dry, and I use them all the time, to good effect. You might also want to try bumpits (Google it!) to get some volume but minimise the back-combing.
The only hot rollers that will even have a curl that lasts more than 10 minutes in my hair is Hot Sticks, and even then if I brush too much (not at all that much really), the curl will fall out leaving an ugly wayward half curled ends.
My hair is straight as a board! ...and probably the reason it is so fussy! Oh to have curly hair, but the grass always looks greener on the other side doesn't it :)
I have not tried any Afro products, though I have seen them in the drug stores. Are there any specific products/brands you recommend?
Yes, but I can't think of the brand name right now... I'll get back to you!
No problem.
Organic Root Stimulator olive oil replenishing conditioner is my absolute fave for sorting our dry hair, but everything they do is great. Here's the website, or you can find them in any afro shop.

Let me know how they work for you!
